These Are Strange Times My Dear
9 May – 6 June, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday 9th May, 7:00 – 10:30pm

Los Angeles – Black Maria Gallery is pleased to announce "These Are Strange Times My Dear"; a group show featuring the latest works from Catia Chien, CJ Metzger and Dany Paragouteva. This show is a mystical interpretation of our current turbulent times. The artists are exploring our journey through the current storm of political and economic instability, searching for something positive to grasp onto. In a time of such negativity, this exhibition strives to expose some silver linings.
Catia Chien works are filled with vivid imagination and have been described as rich with whimsy, color and energy. Besides her fine art, Catia also creates illustrations for children’s books, films and animation as well as comic book anthologies. Catia lives and works in Southern California.
Candace (or CJ) Metzger is an artist whose narrative paintings and creations layer whimsical and surreal imagery. Her work is profoundly inspired by her 6 year old daughter, fairy tales, mythology, and her observations of relationships between humans, nature & the environment. She lives and works in North East Los Angeles.
Dany Paragouteva graduated with a BFA in Illustration with Distinction from Art Center College of Design. Dany’s passion for drawing and painting started when she was about 2 years old. Her paintings have a magical quality that elicits the dark side of fairytales. They are mysterious yet familiar. Originally from Bulgaria, Paragouteva now lives in Los Angeles.

LEBASSE PROJECTS

LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, “Hello and Goodbye”, a solo exhibition from Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto. This will be Yamamoto' second major solo exhibition, and will mark his largest body of work to date both in size and scale. The show represents a breakthrough in work from Yamamoto, and will reflect a continuation of intimate statements of self-expression that began in his last exhibition. Yamamoto’s previous exhibition focused on the artists’ internal struggle while “Hello and Goodbye” is inspired by a more external series of experiences. Being born and raised in suburban Japan and now living in Los Angeles, Yamamoto is challenged by feelings of separation both personally, culturally and artistically. There remains an unending cycle of connection and disconnection with the world around Yamamoto. As he becomes more disconnected with his Japanese roots he becomes more connected to his adopted American lifestyle, yet being away from his family helps him understand their true value and importance thus creating an even deeper connection.

Opening in conjunction with Yoskay Yamamoto is a solo exhibition from Australian artist Melissa Haslam. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition, and will mark her largest body of work to date. Haslam’s work will be showcased in the gallery’s Project Room. For her first solo “Wild Fields”, Haslam has concerned herself with a series of interactions and connections between humans and nature. Specifically focused on interrupted cycles of life, we see characters in the work becoming part of a natural world where they shouldn’t be, yet nature has adapted to include them. We see a fascination in the paintings with imitating nature – taming it, rearranging it, and striving to be a part of it

LeBasse Projects presents two concurrent solo exhibitions:
“Hello and Goodbye” a solo exhibition by Yoskay Yamamoto in our main gallery
and
"Wild Fields" a solo exhibition by Melissa Haslam in our project room.

May 9th – May 28th
Artist reception: Saturday, May 9th, 7-10p
